Are We Addicted to Complexity?

What is it costing us?

There’s something I’ve been noticing lately

Not just in systems
Not just in psychology
But in people

We have become very good at breaking ourselves into parts

Parts of the mind
Parts of the personality
Parts of the past
Parts of the nervous system

At first, it made sense

Something complex appears
So we break it down
Study it
Try to understand

That is how we learn

But somewhere along the way

We stopped using fragmentation as a tool

And started living inside the pieces

We began identifying with the fragments

My trauma
My inner child
My pattern
My diagnosis

Once something becomes mine
It becomes harder to let it move

It is no longer something we experience

It becomes something we are

A quiet attachment forms

Complexity starts to feel like depth
Like value

And being simple starts to feel like something is missing

We do not form that in isolation

It is reflected back to us

Complexity is praised
Nuance is elevated
Struggle becomes identity

And in subtle ways
Being complicated starts to feel like being interesting

Like being someone worth paying attention to

So we hold onto it

We add

More language
More frameworks
More understanding

While slowly drifting further away
From actually feeling ourselves

The body does not work in parts

It moves as a whole

The nervous system does not need another story

It needs safety
Movement
Completion

From a neuroscience lens, the brain is constantly trying to resolve and predict

When an experience is not completed
It does not disappear

It stays active

Looping

Looking for resolution

Most emotional loops stay open
Not because they are deep or mysterious

But because they were never fully felt

Interrupted
Avoided
Analysed
Overridden

Thinking about something is not the same as completing it

And awareness without movement
Can quietly become another form of holding

There is a subtle addiction here

To refining the story
To understanding it better
To becoming more precise
More aware

The brain will often choose a familiar loop
Over an unfamiliar resolution

Even if the loop is uncomfortable

Because familiar feels predictable

And predictable feels safe

But at some point

The simplest path becomes the hardest to choose

Because it can feel like we are letting go of something important

What if healing is not about becoming more complex

What if it is about gently removing what was added on top

What if the system already knows what to do

And always has

What if awareness is not here to dissect endlessly

But to notice when we are interfering

And step out of the way

Maybe we were never meant to become experts in our fragmentation

Maybe wholeness was never lost

Only covered
